Moi University In Trouble.

Education CS Julius Ogamba has assured Kenyans that the government will save Moi University from collapse.

He pledged to outline a rescue plan and sustainability measures soon, saying efforts to resuscitate it are at an advanced stage.

“We have put in place a programme that will ensure Moi University operates sustainably. A comprehensive strategy to address its challenges is in advanced stages. We will soon update the public on the progress,” he said Monday.

Riddled with debt of more than Sh8 billion, the institution has faced financial mismanagement, a bloated workforce and unfulfilled obligations to staff.

Additionally, lecturers have been on strike for weeks as they demand their dues including delayed salaries, pension and unremitted statutory contributions, some of which date back five years.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) has accused the university’s management of negligence and leaving students stranded in academic limbo due to frequent strikes. This, they say, has led to some learners taking up to a decade to complete degree programmes that should ordinarily take four years.

“It is unfair for students to spend nine years pursuing a degree. We are committed to resolving Moi University’s challenges with long-term and sustainable solutions,” said CS Ogamba.

The National Assembly Education Committee, chaired by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, recently toured the institution and called for drastic measures, including disbandment of the university’s management team.

Among other recommendations, they want the university placed under caretaker leadership to restore operational and financial stability.

Reiterating his commitment to restore confidence in Moi University, CS Ogamba also promised to improve the state of the education sector as a whole.

As KCSE examinations near conclusion this week, he urged officials overseeing the process to remain vigilant, promising that integrity in education would remain a top priority.

“Education is the backbone of our society. We will not allow institutions or systems to fail our children,” he said.
